Two important definitions from Cambridge Dictionary:

Foster: to encourage the development or growth of ideas or feelings.

Autonomy: the right of a group of people to govern itself or to organize its own activities.

In this talk, we’ll discuss ideas that aim to help our students become more autonomous learners, both in class and especially outside of the class.

Some ideas that will be discussed:

  • Using students’ questions to foster autonomy;
  • Autonomy-building tasks and homework;
  • Inductive vs deductive clarification of language;
  • Raising students’ awareness of how they are the ones in charge of their learning, not their teachers.
